Kestrels Close Up: Nest Box Project Talk & Walk

April 27 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

American kestrel

Did you know that Kestrel Land Trust’s namesake, the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is one of the most rapidly declining species in Massachusetts? Because the causes for this decline are unclear, Kestrel has been working with the U.S. Forest Service, the MA Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, Mass Audubon, and others to observe kestrel populations in hopes of helping to determine and address those causes.

In 2012, after helping conserve 32 acres of grassland in the Fort River Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge in Hadley, we initiated our Kestrel Nest Box Project to help boost kestrels’ chances of adding to the next generation. The ongoing project is part of a larger effort by state agencies and nonprofits to preserve and restore habitat throughout the Commonwealth. Kestrel staff and volunteers have installed 24 kestrel nest boxes on conservation lands around the Valley. Skilled volunteers watch and report on activity at all the boxes, including box occupancy and breeding success. Valuable information is shared with the the MA State Ornithologist for a statewide study.

On Saturday, April 27, 9-10:30 am, join Kestrel staff for a talk and walk to learn more about the American Kestrel and the Kestrel Nest Box Project. This event will be held at Conte Refuge in Hadley, which hosts five kestrel nest boxes. After gathering at the pavilion for the talk, we will walk on a footpath to one of the boxes to view it up close and see a demonstration of how to inspect the activity inside it using a ladder to reach the box. Afterwards, we will walk the accessible trail to view a second box located in the adjoining field.

This event is being offered in partnership with The Eric Carle Museum to celebrate their Birdwatching with Eric Carle exhibit on display from March 16 – August 25.

Registration is required. Sliding-scale donation welcome.
