“Kestrel Reads” Book Discussion Group: North Woods: A Novel

September 11 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Location, location, location. Daniel Mason’s gorgeous fifth novel, North Woods, is the story of a place — a yellow house deep in the woods of western Massachusetts — and its motley succession of occupants, human and otherwise, who leave their mark on the property over the course of four centuries.” – NPR

North Woods Novel CoverDaniel Mason is the author of The Piano Tuner, A Far Country, The Winter Soldier, and A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent book, North Woods (2023), is a New York Times Book Review Top Ten Book of the Year, Washington Post Top Ten Book of the Year, Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and a Best Book of the Year: Time, The Boston Globe, NPR, Chicago Public Library, The Star Tribune, The Economist, The Christian Science Monitor, Real Simple, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and Bookreporter.

Read or listen to North Woods, then meet up to discuss it on Wednesday, September 11, 6:30-8:00 PM at the Kestrel headquarters in Amherst. The discussion will be moderated by Kestrel member Cheri LeBlond.

Like so many of the arts, the written word has the power to inform but also to reach the heart. Book clubs expand on this experience by providing a common, respectful, creative space to listen and be heard, as well as to amiably disagree. Book lovers who share and explore ideas with each other become better readers, writers, and collaborators. Unpacking a good book deepens and enriches the story or content, giving you insights you’ll carry into the next read, creative endeavor, or conversation.

About the Moderator: Often lost in a good book, Cheri LeBlond has moderated book clubs for almost 10 years. A former bookstore owner, she’s had the pleasure of exploring the joys and pitfalls of storytelling with avid readers, dedicated writers, and persnickety publishers. Formerly of Kansas City, she now resides in Amherst and is delighted to live in the trees and walk Kestrel’s many trails.

We encourage both new and past participants to join us! Registration required for each quarterly discussion group. Limited to 15 participants. Sliding-scale donation welcome.
