Kestrel Reads Book Discussion: The Nature Fix

June 5 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Intrigued by our storied renewal in the natural world, Williams sets out to uncover the science behind nature’s positive effects on the brain. Delving into completely new research, she uncovers the powers of the natural world to improve health, promote reflection and innovation, and ultimately strengthen our relationships. As our modern lives shift dramatically indoors, these ideas—and the answers they yield—are more urgent than ever.

Florence Williams is a journalist, author, speaker, and podcaster. She is a contributing editor at Outside Magazine and a freelance writer for the New York TimesNew York Times MagazineNational Geographic, The New York Review of Books and numerous other publications. She has received many awards, including a 2023 PEN America book award, two National Magazine Award nominations, six magazine awards from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the John Hersey Prize at Yale.

Read or listen to The Nature Fix, then meet up to discuss it on Wednesday, June 5, 6:30-8:00 PM at the Kestrel House in Amherst. The discussion will be moderated by Kestrel member Cheri LeBlond.

Like so many of the arts, the written word has the power to inform but also to reach the heart. Book clubs expand on this experience by providing a common, respectful, creative space to listen and be heard, as well as to amiably disagree. Book lovers who share and explore ideas with each other become better readers, writers, and collaborators. Unpacking a good book deepens and enriches the story or content, giving you insights you’ll carry into the next read, creative endeavor, or conversation.

About the Moderator: Often lost in a good book, Cheri LeBlond has moderated book clubs for almost 10 years. A former bookstore owner, she’s had the pleasure of exploring the joys and pitfalls of storytelling with avid readers, dedicated writers, and persnickety publishers. Formerly of Kansas City, she now resides in Amherst and is delighted to live in the trees and walk Kestrel’s many trails.

We encourage both new and past participants to join us! Registration required for each quarterly discussion group. Limited to 15 participants with sliding-scale donation.
