Engaging Nature Exhibit
May 8 - May 28

In the Valley, we’re fortunate to be surrounded not only by beautiful landscapes, but also by talented artists who capture the essence of the land in paintings. Engaging Nature: Recent Work by the Amherst Plein Air Society is the monthly exhibit in May at Leverett Arts & Culture Center. Nearly 35 Amherst Plein Air Society (APAS) artists will exhibit over 140 paintings that are inspired by engaging with the natural world. Some were painted completely en plein air. Others, started in the field, were completed in the studio. Paintings by studio artists’ were created from their sketches, studies, and photographs of nature.
One section of the show features the seasonal series done in partnership with Kestrel Land Trust, with plein air paintings of the four seasons at Plum Brook Pond, which is located adjacent to Kestrel’s Amherst headquarters. Most paintings are for sale and proceeds from the sale of these paintings will benefit Kestrel. Artist contact information is provided in the Gallery Brochure.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Sunday, May 7, 2:00-5:00 PM. All are welcome to come meet the artists, view the paintings, and enjoy some refreshments. There is no fee to attend.
Leverett Arts & Crafts Center, located at 13 Montague Road in Leverett, is open Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00-5:00 PM.
APAS was founded in 2015 to bring together artists who love to paint regional landscape en plein air. All media, ages, and levels of experience are welcome. With over 65 artists, APAS represents a wide diversity of styles and approaches to landscape painting. Paint-outs are offered three days a week, April through October (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM), and through the winter when weather permits. After each paint-out, optional constructive critiques of paintings created are held. While paint-outs do not include formal instruction, APAS is a supportive learning environment where all learn from one other. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in or curiosity about plein air painting. For more information, contact founding director SusannePersonette@gmail.com.
