Walking Tour of Historic Holyoke Canal System

August 21, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Holyoke Canal summer

Human technology has been shaping the land and waterways for generations in the Pioneer Valley. On Saturday, August 21 from 9 to 11 am, join us for a walking tour along both the South Hadley and Holyoke sides of the Connecticut River to learn about the cultural history of the historic canal systems located here and the river’s ecosystem, which flows between the two. This will be a 2-mile walk on mostly flat terrain.

On this guided walking tour, your guide will be Bob Comeau, a former science teacher who researches the history of Holyoke and of South Hadley with a focus on historic canal systems. Join Bob to learn interesting cultural and ecological facts as you pass by the South Hadley Falls, Holyoke Dam, the fish lift, and Second Level Canal. The tour also includes some wonderful views and vistas along the way.

Please be prepared to walk 2 miles.

This program is free, but registration is required. Donations are appreciated!
